Nestable packaging reduces pharmaceutical supply-chain costs

The challenge

A pharmaceutical manufacturer needed a more cost-effective bulk packaging solution for transporting tablets and capsules. Its existing drum provided the required quality and protection but was over-dimensioned for several applications. Any alternative had to maintain strong moisture protection, improve ease of use and retain the distinctive appearance customers associated with the company.

The solution

CurTec developed several prototypes before the manufacturer selected a customized 20-liter Click Pack pail. Its large, total opening makes filling easier and allows PE liners to be emptied and removed without resistance. A clear and consistent closure provides straightforward handling for contract manufacturers, while ultra-low moisture vapor transmission rates help protect the packaged pharmaceuticals. A lid in the manufacturer’s brand color preserves worldwide recognition.

The benefits

The nestable design substantially reduces empty transport volume: where ten pallets were previously required, the same number of containers can now be delivered on two. This represents an 80% reduction in empty transport volume and considerable cost savings. It also lowers storage requirements and improves handling throughout the supply chain. The solution continues to be used for tablets and capsules and has delivered the required quality, convenience and customer acceptance.
