New: Pharma Grade Packo

By Marc Martens

Choosing a pharmaceutical package becomes much easier when all of the ins and outs are known. Therefore CurTec developed the Pharma Grade Packo – a small volume container that has been tested according to both the European and US Pharmacopeia standards and is suitable as primary packaging for pharmaceuticals.

Primary plastic packaging should be safe to use, should be compatible with the pharmaceutical ingredients inside and should be manufactured of materials that prevent absorption and migration of its contents. Besides being chemically compatible, the packaging should not release substances that can affect the stability of its content or present a risk of toxicity.

New raw material
The new Packo containers and lids are manufactured from pharma grade HDPE and colorized with a pharma grade colorant. The inner seals are made from a blend of pharma grade HDPE and LDPE.

EU and US Pharmacopoeia
The Pharma Grade Packos comply with the requirements of monograph 3.1.3 of the European Pharmacopoeia and have been tested for e.g.:

  • Presence of additives
  • Presence and identity of Titanium Dioxide
  • Extractable Aluminium, Titanium, Zinc and Heavy Metals

The new Packos have also been tested for functional properties according to chapters 661 and 671 of the US Pharmacopoeia:

  • Identity from DSC endotherm (661)
  • Identity from FTIR spectrum (661)
  • Heavy Metals in aqueous extract (661)
  • Barrier protection (671)

GMP certification
Besides product design and the selection of raw materials, the manufacturing process is also an important topic. Customers require full process control so that the packaging products meet all specifications and cannot pose a risk to its contents.

To be able to offer that security, CurTec has worked hard the last few years to implement Good Manufacturing Practice. A few weeks ago, its production plant has been GMP-certified according to ISO 15378.

On display during events
Pharma Grade Packo received critical acclaim from the public during recent pharma events CPhI Worldwide and Pharma EXPO. Next year, you can get acquainted with this brand new product during Pharmapack in Paris and CPhI North America in Philadelphia. Samples will available at that time.
