Protection of goods, the safety of people, and stewardship of the environment are key concerns when choosing a packaging product. During the production process, plastic is treated with fluorine-nitrogen and fluorine-air compounds which form a film-like surface of one micrometer on the base plastic material. Fluorination changes the characteristics of the polymer in terms of polarity, cohesive energy, density and surface tension. In doing so it provides a barrier against a range of solvents including chemicals, organic solvents, oil and fuels.
Through fluorination, plastics offer protection against moisture, fumes, odors and even micro-organic attacks and certain bacteria. The effectiveness of fluorination has been proven though its use in other industries. For example, automotive engineers use fluorinated vehicle components in fuel tanks and others systems to avoid the permeation of hydrocarbons.
Fluorination does not alter the useful characteristics of polyethylene. Strength and conductivity remain, as does the ability to print on plastic containers. Fluorinated containers fall within FDA requirements, and many food companies are already using fluorinated containers.
All plastic CurTec drums, pail containers and jars are water vapor tight, some offer UV light protection and a few of them are even made of conductive plastic to avoid electrostatic discharge. In addition, CurTec can have its packs fluorinated in order to reduce the permeability to almost zero.
