A new standard for the coffee industry

The Finnish coffee company Kaffa Roastery made an ecological investment in the packaging and distribution of their product. According to Svante Hampf, founder of Kaffa Roastery, reusable coffee drums are the next step towards more sustainable coffee sales and consumption and can potentially reduce the carbon footprint of coffee deliveries by up to 90 percent. Kaffa now offers all of its business customers in the Helsinki metropolitan area the opportunity to buy coffee by the drum.

“As a producer and intermediary, Kaffa Roastery is responsible for ensuring that customers can buy coffee more and more ecologically. Although 2020 has been financially challenging for us, we are not prepared to become flexible about our sustainability goals and values.” Hampf says.

In a year where businesses are struggling to survive due to the Corona crisis, Kaffa boldy decided to push the drum project forward and invest in packaging, the activation of a new ERP system and the reorganization of warehousing.

Reduce carbon foot print

According to preliminary calculations, each drum should be reused ten times, after which its carbon footprint is the same as that of a coffee bag. Early estimates indicate a single drum will be used to deliver more than a hundred coffee orders.

CurTec drums, pails and jars have been carefully designed and manufactured and are most suitable for multiple use. The choice to use them more than once is a responsible and sustainable choice.

The plastic screw lid drums have a barcode for tracking and tracing, return deliveries and monitoring the lifespan. They are manufactured by CurTec and washed and maintained by Kaffa between orders. Kaffa wants to track the distance and age of drums closely so the company can acquire precise data on how much they can reduce their carbon footprint.

“We hope that as many customers as possible will participate, because the more drums we use, the more good we can do and the more information we can gather.”

Bulk sales and reusable packaging

“We want to set a new standard for the coffee industry as we believe and hope that bulk sales and reusable packaging will be the future.” Hampf commented. A bulk pack for consumers is also under construction.
