Avoid transport damage and claims
Stibat opts for a battery container that meets legal requirements
Since the ruling on batteries in 1995, Stibat has coordinated the collection of spent batteries in the Netherlands. With a streamlined system for collection, sorting, recycling and registration Stibat takes on a lot of care and administrative work for manufacturers and importers of batteries. By joining Stibat they can call upon the services of this organisation and can expect wide-ranging assistance in complying with their legal obligations.
Over the past 15 years, Stibat has established an extensive network for the collection of portable and industrial batteries. Not only are used batteries collected from shops that sell (products with) batteries, but also from technicians, local councils, schools and camp sites. Free collection containers are available for all battery collection points operated by Stibat’s service. One of these containers is called a collection barrel.
The collection barrel is composed of two parts, namely a plastic open top CurTec drum with a ‘Point of Collection’ over-sleeve over it so it can be clearly identified as a container for disposing used batteries. There are two reasons for Stibat’s choice of a CurTec drum: CurTec is able to deliver a single container that fits under the existing ‘Point of Collection’ display and it also meets the applicable transport requirements.
One of the transport requirements is that no excess pressure should build up in the transport container. The movement of the batteries during transport should also be limited and conductive parts should not come into contact with each other. In addition, the transport container must bear a UN marking to be able to transport discarded lithium batteries. Lithium batteries are usually found in any mix of spent batteries and therefore the total mix of transported batteries is subject to the hazardous materials transport for lithium batteries legislation.
The CurTec screw lid drum has a capacity of 52 litres and can carry a maximum of around 80 kg of batteries. The full transport drum is securely sealed by the driver using the lid and taken away after he places a new empty drum under the display. After the drums are emptied at the national sorting centre, they are cleaned inside and out for reuse. A cost-efficient solution!
Stibat not only coordinates the collection, sorting, recycling and registration of used batteries but is also trying to influence Dutch consumers’ attitudes to collection. On its website, Stibat not only provides a great deal of information on the how and why of collection and raises awareness of the disposal facilities, but consumers are also encouraged through incentives, fun and games to deliver as many spent batteries as possible. Stibat’s character ’Battery Man’ is the figurehead and gives an identity to the collection barrels and boxes.
